How to choose a wet underfloor heating kit
The right wet underfloor heating kit starts with the floor construction and heating design. A floor-area label helps you compare packages, but it does not tell you the complete tube quantity, room zoning or finished floor height.
1. Choose the floor construction
For a floor designed to receive screed, consider a clip-down or compatible castellated fixing system. For an overlay installation, compare the board specification, substrate preparation and required floor covering layers. A board's nominal thickness is not the total installed floor build-up.
2. Measure the heated area
Supply a room-by-room plan showing the area intended to be heated, permanent fixtures, manifold position and routes between rooms. Different assumptions about usable floor area can make two equally labelled kits contain different quantities.
3. Confirm spacing and continuous circuits
As a starting calculation, tube in the field is approximately heated area divided by pipe spacing in metres. At 200 mm centres, that is about 5 m/m². At 150 mm centres, it is about 6.67 m/m². Tails and turns add to these figures. The designer must check heat output, flow and pressure loss, and allocate each continuous circuit to a supplied coil.
4. Separate circuits from control zones
A manifold port serves a heating circuit. A room control zone may contain more than one circuit. Count thermostats by the required independently controlled zones, then specify actuators and a compatible wiring centre for the circuits they control. A six-port manifold does not automatically mean six rooms or six thermostats.
5. Match the heat source
A boiler system may need a pump and mixing assembly. Heat-pump systems require their own hydraulic assessment: do not simply remove a pump or substitute a mixing pack because the heat source has changed.
6. Compare a complete quotation
Check tube coil sizes, the complete connection assemblies, board quantities and routing, controls, floor preparation materials, delivery and VAT. Ask what is excluded and who is responsible for design, installation and commissioning.
